UCMAS publica en su newsletter mensual una entrevista a nuestro Subdirector de Primaria para conocer la implantación del ábaco en esta etapa. Este es el resultado:
- El Centro Inglés fue el primer colegio en Andalucía en implantar el programa UCMAS de forma curricular. ¿Se han cumplido las expectativas del centro?
Se están cumpliendo todas las expectativas puestas en la implantación curricular del método UCMAS en el Centro Inglés.
Los alumnos están encantados con el ábaco, ilusionados y muy motivados con el método porque día a día están viendo el progreso que están teniendo.
Las clases suelen ser muy motivadoras para el alumnado y el ambiente de trabajo suele ser muy bueno. Creo que la clave del método es la variedad de actividades y la realización de juegos que hace que no se caiga en la monotonía.
- ¿Cómo definiría usted esta metodología a alguien que no conozca la eficacia del aprendizaje con ábaco?
Con esta metodología se consigue un desarrollo intelectual de mayor alcance, no solo en el área de matemáticas sino en todas las asignaturas, ya que afecta positivamente a la creatividad, la imaginación, la memoria y la capacidad de concentración de nuestros alumnos.
- ¿Cuántos alumnos se han beneficiado ya del sistema UCMAS en el Centro Inglés?
En el Centro Inglés son ya unos 600 alumnos los que se han beneficiado del método UCMAS. Cuando comenzamos fueron unos 300 alumnos y posteriormente se han ido incorporando unos cincuenta alumnos cada curso correspondientes al primer curso del método.
- ¿Cómo ha percibido la evolución de los niños en estos años de programa?
Además de una mayor capacidad para el cálculo mental, hemos visto una mejora sobre todo en su capacidad de concentración y memoria. Aunque lo que más llama la atención es que ven el cálculo numérico de una forma más amena y divertida.
- ¿Cuáles cree que son los principales beneficios que aporta a un colegio introducir curricularmente el sistema UCMAS?
En nuestro Centro se ha implantado el método en la Educación Primaria. La principal ventaja es que esta metodología la están trabajando todos los alumnos del Centro Inglés durante su paso por Primaria.
Cuando nuestros alumnos terminan la etapa de Primaria y comienzan la de Secundaria, ha terminado el método con lo que esto supone para su desarrollo intelectual.
- ¿Cómo ha contribuido El Centro Inglés en la mejora del método UCMAS?
Los profesores de El Centro Inglés que imparten el método UCMAS, en su afán de hacer las clases más amenas y que los alumnos estén más motivados han sugerido algunas ideas que se han puesto en práctica, como un sistema de recompensa a través de pegatinas en un mural o la proyección de las Flash Cards en la pizarra digital pudiendo cambiar el tiempo de exposición.

- The English Centre was the first school to establish the UCMAS programme as part of its curriculum. Have the School’s expectations been met?
All the expectation based upon the curricular establishment of the UCMAS method are being met at The English Centre.
Pupils are thrilled with the abacus, excited and very motivated because they can appreciate their own progress on a daily basis.
The classes tend to be very motivating for the pupils and the work environment is normally very good. I believe the variety of activities and the games are they keys of this method as they avoid monotony.
- How would you define this methodology to someone who is not familiar with the efficiency of learning with an abacus?
A higher intellectual development is achieved with this methodology, not only regarding mathematics, but in all subjects, as it has a positive effect on creativity, imagination, memory and on our pupils’ concentration skills.
- How many English Centre Pupils have already benefitted by the UCMAS system?
Around 600 English Centre pupils have benefitted from the UCMAS method. There were around 300 pupils when we began, and about fifty pupils start every year when they reach the first stage of the method.
- How can you perceive the pupils development in these years with the programme?
Apart from a better ability for mental arithmetic, we have observe an improvement in their concentration and memory, although what draws out attention is that they consider number calculations a more fun and enjoyable task.
- What do you consider as the main benefits for a school that includes the UCAS system into their curriculum?
This method is established in the Primary stage in our School. The main advantage is that all English Centre pupils are working with their methodology during their Primary years.
When our pupils finish their Primary stage and move onto Secondary, they have finished the method with all its benefits to their intellectual development.
- How has The English Centre contributed to the improvement of the UCMAS method?
The English Centre UCMAS method teachers, in their aim to make classes more enjoyable and students more motivated, have suggested some ideas that have later been put into practice, such as a reward system using stickers on a wall chart or a Flash Cards projection on the digital board where the exposition time can be changed.
